The Very Hungry Caterpillar

This is probably the most well-known book by Eric Carle. This awesome book demonstrates how the egg turned into a beautiful butterfly.  This egg that turns into a very hungry caterpillar, had so much food but later on turned into a butterfly. This book also teaches days of the week, basic counting, the importance of good nutrition and much more. It is brightly illustrated and the die cut pages were fun for our girls to poke through all the food that the hungry caterpillar ate.

Lucy loves this book. All the animals are illustrated in bold and beautiful colors. On each page introduces new character. The text nudges the reader onward to give hints as to which animal they’ll come across next. With rhyming words and repeating patterns,  it was easy for our girls to interact and predict the next animal. I thought the ending was really nice too.

The Very Busy Spider

This book has textures through raised printing. This tactile style engages our girls with the story.  The books are about the farm animals that try to divert a busy little spider from spinning her web. With persistence, the spider produces a beautiful and useful web. This book is also recommended for vision impaired kids.

The Grouchy Ladybug

This ladybug is indeed a grouchy one. Always looking for a fight,  even from those much larger than her size and stronger than she is.  It can be used as a teaching moment that all actions have consequences, that having good manners is important. It also has to die-cut pages that can engage your young reader.

Lucy once told us that she wishes she can be a mermaid, ha! ( she's a fan of Little Mermaid) This adorable book is about wishing to be someone else. The bored little chameleon who just wishes he could be like other animals and after a series of amusing attempts to be like other animals, the chameleon finally realizes that there is no one he’d rather be than himself. A teaching moment for us to tell our kids to embrace uniqueness and to be yourself.

The Artist Who Painted a Blue Horse

Does your little preschooler or toddler love to paint? Our girls love to paint, draw and scribble. This book is about being creative. You can be creative by thinking out of the box, even if it is not the norm. This book was inspired by Franz Marc, ( his art was banned by the Nazis) who usually uses a blue horse on his paintings. Just like all other Eric Carle books,  this is beautifully bold in colors!

  3. The Very Hungry Caterpillar was one of my sons favorites when he was younger. We must have read it to him dozens of times and it was one of the first books he could read himself (or maybe he just had it memorized).
